Conference Host

Botswana Association of Family Physicians

The Botswana Association of Family Physicians (BAOFP) was formed in 2019 to promote evidence based primary care within Botswana, promote a culture of research and continuous medical education, provide support and mentorship within Family Medicine and to engage in community wellness projects.

We have carried the theme of planetary health and Primary Health Care onto the WONCA Africa Regional conference in 2026.

We hope you will join us at the conference in Gaborone to celebrate all we have achieved as a young Association, encourage us to grow, learn and collaborate as we advocate for Family Physicians across the African continent.

Family Medicine is a recognised and growing speciality in Botswana with Family Physicians well distributed around the country to deliver care where it is needed in local communities. Primary Health Care is the backbone of the healthcare service in Botswana. We are proud to collaborate with the University of Botswana in supporting the post-graduate training program and doctors as they begin their journey in Primary Health Care. The Ministry of Health’s goal to revitalize Primary Health Care in Botswana aligns with hosting this prestigious conference, showcasing what family medicine is about and what family physicians do.

The Association is actively involved in establishing the East, Central and Southern African College of Family Physicians (ECSA-CFP) to help transform primary healthcare education, research and advocacy across the region.

The Association held its officially launch to coincide with World Family Doctor Day in May 2024 with a walk and family fun day, celebrating the 2024 theme “Healthy Planet, Healthy People”.
